Pfizer was founded in 1849 by two cousins, Charles Pfizer and Charles Erhart. They started the company as a fine chemicals business with $2,500 they borrowed from Charles' father. Their first product, which turned out to be an immediate success, was a treatment for parasites. People bought it for its curative properties as well as its fine taste.

Pfizer was the chemist and Erhart was a confectioner, so they concocted an almond-toffee flavored product made with santonin (an anti-parasitic) and shaped it into a candy cone.

Among its first products, the one that established the company included citric acid. Demand for the substance blossomed with the growing popularity of drinks like Coca-Cola™, Dr. Pepper™, and Pepsi-Cola™. As the United States' leading maker of citric acid, sales took off and became the basis for the increasingly successful company.
